To every RESPONSIBLE father on the planet right this second – Happy Father’s Day.
My mission with this article is to appreciate every RESPONSIBLE male figure out there.
The real men who are out there doing whatever it takes ethically to take care of their family.
To the real men who are actually a good example to their kids – Happy Father’s Day!
To every future father ;
I hope you are preparing to take on responsibilities that are inevitably waiting for you in the future? If you think the future is far, you’re only being myopic – The future is now! Are you prepared?
I remember my 16th birthday very clearly. I was just out of secondary school.
My WAEC result was finally out. I did well.
I was expecting my Dad to give me a fancy gift (Because I passed my external exams).
Something like a phone or something any sixteen year old kid would want to show off with.
On the day of my birthday at around 6am, my Dad called me to his room.
My mum and Dad prayed for me. I was expecting a gift. No gift. I was anxious already.
Four hours from that moment , my Dad walked into my room. His hands were behind him as if he was hiding something.
Now, I was smiling expecting to receive a “fancy” gift from him.
He looked me in the eye smiling and when he finally unveiled his hands…. It was a book!
I was so disappointed. He could see it on my face.
He said in a direct tone ;”This is your birthday gift”.
He paused, smiled and then continued ; “You’re to return it in 48 hours with a summary of what you got from it”.
He left my room almost immediately he said those words. I had nothing to say.
I was so disappointed.
I was furious, angry and I was frustrated with the idea that I would have to read a boring book – On my birthday.
Long story short, I finished reading that book in less than 48 hours.
That book (I don’t remember the title right now), changed me a lot.
That book did one thing for me – It gave me permission to go for greatness.
Although, I don’t agree with all of my Dad’s idea or concepts.
My Dad ain’t perfect but that birthday gift he gave to me was a game changer.
I’m not suggesting Dads give their kids books as a birthday gift (It isn’t a bad idea though) .
I’m just sharing with you the most valuable lesson I learned from my Dad.
That book He gave to me on my sixteenth (16th) birthday changed my life.
I’m using this medium to implore parents (Not only fathers) to be of good example to their kids and empower them.
The lessons your kids receive in school ain’t enough. Empower your kids with the right information.
